William F. Simpson, 88, formerly of Poland, died Tuesday morning, September 5, 2017 at the Casey Hospice House in Rockville, Maryland, after a short illness.
William, affectionately known by family and friends as "Scotty," was born February 19, 1929 in Coatbridge, Scotland, a son of Robert and Catherine Simpson. He was raised in Scotland and served in the British Air Force. When he was in his 20's, he came to the United States and lived with his sister, Mary Charles and her children in Girard, before making his home in Poland. For the last five years, he has been living with his daughter, son in law and grandchildren in Maryland.
Before his retirement, Scotty was an Ironworker with Ironworkers Local 207. He was proud to have built many local buildings, bridges and towers.
He was a former member of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Youngstown where he and his wife made pierogies for many years. Scotty enjoyed his weekly gatherings in Struthers to play poker with friends, going to the casino, performing magic tricks, singing, and bowling in several leagues over the years. Scotty also enjoyed traveling, making many visits back to Scotland to keep in touch with family and lifelong friends. He lived life to the fullest!
His wife, the former Anne Setnyk, whom he married in November of 1959, preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine (Edwin Crider) Simpson of Brookeville, Maryland; two grandchildren, Chase Simpson Crider, United States Air Force, Okinawa, Japan and Corianne Simpson Crider of Brookeville, Maryland; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by 10 siblings, including his sister, Mary Charles, with whom he had a very close relationship.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
Family and friends will be received on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
