Charlevoix - William Evan Phillips, of Charlevoix, MI, formerly of Lowellville, died on Friday, March 25, 2011 at the Hiland Cottage supported by Hospice and surrounded by family.
Bill was born January 30, 1927 in Weirton, WV, a son of Louis and Florence Smith Phillips.
He was a 1946 graduate of Rochester High School and attended Michigan State University. Bill worked as a draftsman for Glowe-Smith Industrial, retiring in 1989.
A member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Bill served as secretary and treasurer. A United States Navy Veteran, Bill served as Aviation Ordinance Man 3rd Class in World War II and was awarded the freedom medal. He was a member of American Legion #247 and the Ham Radio Operator extra class 20 over 9 Ham Radio Club.
Bill's wife, the former Mary Sue Meehan, whom he married February 20, 1965, died June 18, 2009. He leaves one sister, Clarice Tabbert of Lake City, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, James Phillips.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Lowellville, with Pastor Pete Haenftling officiating. Interment will follow in the Holy Rosary Cemetery, Lowellville.
Friends will be received Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
