William John (Bud) Lomax, Jr. passed away late Monday evening at Heritage Manor after a long bout with heart and lung disease.
Bud was born August 8, 1923 in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of William J. Sr, and Sarah Cole Lomax.
Bud graduated from the Rayen School in 1941. He then attended Miami University of Ohio until he was drafted in 1943. He was assigned to Army Air Corps basic training, then ASTP training at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. The ASTP program was discontinued and he was assigned to the 84th infantry division (The Rail Splitters) and left for Germany in October 1944. He was wounded on November 22, 1944 near Aachen, Germany and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the combat expert infantry's badge and the European Theater Operations badge. He was then sent to England to recuperate and returned to Nice, France where he worked in the largest PX in Europe.
It was there that he was reunited with his fiancé, 1st Lt. June Jugenheimer of the Army Nurse Corps. They were married on October 23, 1945 at the American Episcopal Church in Nice and lived at the Hotel Negresso until their discharge in 1946.
Bud then returned to Miami University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1948. He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Music fraternity and head drummer with the Miami band. He passed his C.P.A. exam in 1957 and was a principal partner with the firm of Axtmann and Lomax, Inc. He was a member of A.I.C.P.A. and the Ohio Society of C.P.A.'s serving as Director, Vice President and on several committees. He received the Ohio Society's Gold Medal for Meritorious Service in 1991. Bud was also a member of the Mahoning County Society of C.P.A.'s, having served as President.
Bud, whose father was a founder and first President of the Lowellville Savings & Banking Co., was a member of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sky Bank, and a member of the American Bankers Association.
He was previously active in many organizations including the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce, Organization of Protestant Men and the United Way. He was a member of the Youngstown Kiwanis Club and served as Finance Chairman. He served as Director and Treasurer of the Retired Senior Volunteers Program. He was a member of the Youngstown Club and a founding member of the Poland Swim Club.
Bud was a founding member of the Poland Masonic Lodge F & AM and a 32nd degree Mason of the Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite.
Bud was a member of the former First Baptist Temple of Youngstown and the former Western Reserve Baptist Church in Boardman for 60 years. He served as Treasurer, Finance Chairman, Moderator and Chairman of the Board of Deacons and co-chairman of the building committee. He was named Lay Person of the Year in 1999.
Bud was a man of integrity and had deep religious values. His family remembers him as a keen observer with a dry sense of humor, and a lifelong love of music and history. They rarely saw him without his suit coat and polished wingtips. Family vacations were spent visiting historical sites, and he and June enjoyed traveling for banking and CPA conventions. They also owned a vacation home in Transfer, PA. He was a fan of the former Miami Redskins and the Cleveland Indians.
He is survived by his wife the former June Jugenheimer; three children, Sondra (Tom) Foley of Barrington, IL, Pamela (Joe) Sulka of McDonald and William John (Ann) Lomax III of Longmont, CO; three grandchildren, Michele Sulka of Denver, CO, Brendt "BJ" Sulka of Poland, and Lucy Lomax of Longmont, CO.
