Struthers - William H. Hoop, 90, of Struthers, died Saturday afternoon at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House.
Bill was born August 3, 1921 in Punxsutawney, PA, a son of William and Mary Huey Hoop. At the age of 5, Bill and his family moved to Struthers where he was raised until moving to Irwin, PA. in 1948. He returned to Struthers, in 1981.
A 1939 graduate of Struthers High School, Bill worked for a short time for Youngstown Sheet and Tube before attending Bliss Electrical School in Silver Springs, Md where he was certified as an Industrial Electrician. In 1948 Bill was employed as an electrical tester for Westinghouse Electric Corp., in East Pittsburgh. Bill was also highly respected as a certified teacher at the Westinghouse Apprentice Program in East Pittsburgh. After teaching at the Apprentice School, Bill worked as a job analyst for Westinghouse. Bill retired from Westinghouse in 1981 after 33 years of service.
Bill enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. He served for three years in World War II, in the 243rd Combat Engineers Unit as a First Lieutenant. He served in the European Theatre of Operations, and was involved in the reconstruction of the historical Bridge at Remagen after the Battle of the Bulge.
Bill was a member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church and its' Gioras Sunday School class. In Irwin, Pa., Bill was a member of the Irwin Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder. He was also member of the American Legion. In his free time, Bill enjoyed golfing and bowling. When his sons were young he was a boy scout leader for many years. After retirement, Bill and Jean enjoyed spending their winters in Florida.
Bill leaves his wife of 68 years, the former Jean E. Gough, whom he married January 15, 1944; two sons, William Gary (Elaine) Hoop, Tavares, FL., and David Alan Hoop, Broad Channel, NY; and five grandchildren, Lindsey (Peter) Tincher, Melanie (Douglas) Brede, Jonathan Mayo, Sarah Hoop, and Gavin Hoop.
Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert Hoop and a daughter-in-law, Johnette Hoop.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 1:00 PM, at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers with Rev. Thomas Fennell officiating.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
