William Edward âa�A"Sargeâa�A� Conner, 79 Youngstown- William Edward Conner, 79, of Alterra Clare Bridge formerly of Lenox Ave., died Thursday morning at the nursing home. Mr. Conner also known as Sarge was born November 24, 1924 in Zanesville, Ohio, a son of William and Mary Garvey Conner. He lived in Struthers before moving to Youngstown. Mr. Conner was a career Army soldier serving for 20 years, retiring as SFC in 1964. He was in the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II and was a paratroop instructor. During his service he participated in D-Day (Normandy), Battle of the Bulge, and the occupation of Berlin. Mr. Conner and his six brothers were tied for the most siblings serving in World War II. His one sibling, Francis died in service. From 1961 until 1964, he was an instructor for ROTC at Youngstown College. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Association and the Special Forces Association. Mr. Conner enjoyed golfing and achieved five holes-in-one in his life time. His wife the former Wilhelmine Baumgartner, whom he married May 15, 1952, died November 18, 2002. He leaves two sons, William Conner of Youngstown and Michael Conner and daughter-in-law Dyanne of South Euclid, Ohio; two sisters, Rita Simerlink of Youngstown and Ann Jewett of Zanesville; and two grandsons, Michael and Sean Conner. Besides his parents and wife, three sisters, Elizabeth Miller, Ada Williams and Mary McGrath, and seven brothers, John, Luke, Thomas, Robert, Bernard, Paul and Francis Conner preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Monday, 11:00 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers. Friends may call Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent at
