William Bruce Benton

William Bruce Benton, 83, of Poland, died Thursday afternoon at Valley Health Care, Northside Medical Center.
William, also known as Bill, was born March 10, 1928 in Poland, a son of William Foster and Anna Foster Benton.
A life- long resident of Poland, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy Fleet Marines in 1945. He served state-side, in Cleveland, OH., Sampson, N Y, San Diego, CA, Parris Island, S.C., Asheville, N.C., and Dublin GA. After the end of World War II, Bill returned to Poland and received his GED from Poland Seminary High School and attended Youngstown College.
Bill was a truck driver, initially as a broker, and later as a driver, retiring from Trans SPEC Trucking Company in 2000.
He was a member of the American Legion, Post #15, Poland, and served as the last Commander of Poland American Legion Post #145. In 2009 Bill was the Parade Marshall for the Poland Memorial Day Parade. He was an active foster parent for 34 years retiring in 2011 from Mahoning County Children Services. Bill was a life-time member of the Poland United Presbyterian Church.
Bill was an avid card player and loved fishing.
Bill was a gentle man who considered no man an enemy. His riches in life were his children and grandchildren.
Bill leaves his wife, the former Phyllis Parsons, whom he married May 3, 1969; eight children, Susan (J. W.) Benton Watt of Scotland, AR., Nancy (Thomas) Duggins of St. Joseph, MO., William (Carrie) Benton, Jr., of Tulsa, OK., Charles Benton of Las Vegas, NV., Aimee Benton of Boardman, Anna (Christopher) Cox, Sarah (William) Orr, and Rachel (Thomas Maker) Benton all of Poland; fourteen grandchildren, William and Dayle Duggins, Noah, William, and Luke Benton, Nadia Rawhneh, Taylor Benton, Raymond Hammonds, Samantha Cox, William and Jensyn Orr, Manny Solis, Justice Gonzalez, and Christian Maker; one sister Betty (Merle) Madrid of Poland.
Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his mother and father in-law, Carl and Eileen Parsons; and two sisters, Verda Brock and Mary Overmeyer.
Funeral services will be Monday, 11:00 AM at the Poland Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Gilbert officiating. Friends may call Sunday from 4-7 PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and Monday from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM at the church.
