Youngstown - Wilbert C. Muennich, 83, of Youngstown, died Sunday evening, November 15, 2009 at Omni Manor Health Care Center.
Mr. Muennich was born August 21, 1926 in Cleveland, a son of Bernard and Minnie Heyink Muennich.
Mr. Muennich worked as a mechanic for over 20 years for Youngstown Buick and retired from the city of Youngstown as a mechanic.
He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II. Mr. Muennich was a member of St. Christine Church, where he was an usher and worked for numerous years for the church festival. He was an accomplished musician and was known as "Cowboy Willie." In the 1950's, he had his own band and radio show and published his own song titled, There's a Little Log Cabin (Way Out There on the Trail).
Mr. Muennich will be missed by all for his kindness that he showed to everyone. His great-grandchildren called him "Papa Lawnmower" because for as long as he was physically able he always at their home to cut their grass and play with them. Mr. Muennich also would cut grass for his neighbors at Brandywine Apartments and would often be seen scraping the snow from their cars and taking out their trash.
He leaves his wife, the former Frances DiMarzio, whom he married April 12, 1947; his son, William C. Muennich of Youngstown; daughter, Marilyn (James) Fossesca of Youngstown; two grandchildren, James J. (Deena) Fossesca Jr. of North Lima and Janeen (Shane) Hogan of Columbus; four great-grandchildren, Austin James, Olivia Grace, and Brayden Joseph Fossesca, and Isabella Grace Hogan; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Muennich of Michigan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Silverius Muennich.
A memorial mass will be held today at 2 p.m. at St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., with Rev. Kevin Peters officiating.
