Wesley Don Smidt 92, of North Lima died Wednesday morning August 2, 2017 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Poland. He was born March 6, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio to George and Bessie (Aubel) Smidt and had been a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Smidt, known as Don, had been the owner of Solar Oil for many years providing home heating oil. He was an Army veteran serving in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II. Following the war he finished high school, graduating from South High School in 1947.
Don enjoyed camping, antique cars, feeding birds, collecting Gulf Oil memorabilia. Of course his family was, most important to him, celebrating and enjoying their lives together. He was well known for fixing anything for anyone.
Besides his wife, the former Mary C. Gotshall, whom he married in 1953, he leaves two daughters, Kimberly Poma of Boardman and Sherri Smidt of Poland; His son, Kevin Smidt of North Jackson, Ohio; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three additional great-grandchildren are expected.
Besides his parents, a twin brother, Leslie Smidt and a son-in-law Jim Poma are deceased.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday August 5, 2017 at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Visit www.beckerobits.com to send condolences.
