Poland-Wesley F. Armstrong, 86, died Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2014 at his home surrounded by family.
Mr. Armstrong was born June 1, 1927 in Greenville, PA, a son of William and Murrell Hovis Armstrong.
He was a 1945 graduate of Greenville High School, playing both baseball and football. After graduation, he served in the United States Navy during World War II from June of 1945 until being honorably discharged in August of 1946. Mr. Armstrong continued his education at Thiel College and received his bachelor's degree in business. He worked as a credit manager for Standard Slag Company for 46 years, retiring in 1991.
Mr. Armstrong was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians, Cavaliers, and Browns. He also previously managed the Poland Little League and was a basketball and football referee. He was a member of the Junior Achievement; Poland United Methodist Church, where he was on the board of trustees; was in golf and bowling leagues, and the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
He leaves his wife, the former Nancy Carpenter, whom he married November 25, 1948; three sons, Mark (Patty) Armstrong of Scottsdale, AZ, James Armstrong of Dayton, and Jack (Angela) Armstrong of Poland; two daughters, Beth Armstrong of Durham, NC and Laurie (Dennis Jarrett) Armstrong of Yorktown, VA; five grandchildren, Kristine(Dan) Escalante of Georgia, Amy Armstrong, and Lindsay Armstrong, both of California, Erin Armstrong of Georgia, and Stephanie Armstrong of Florida; and three great-grandchildren, Nicole, Madison, and Brandon Escalante.
In addition to his parents, Wesley was preceded in death by three sisters, Opal Snodgrass, Norma Benbow, and Patricia Roos.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Poland United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., and Thursday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church.
