LORDSTOWN-Walter D. McKnight, 83, better known as "Mack" to his friends, passed away of a heart attack after surgery Thursday, October 1, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Walter was born September 6, 1926 in Grove City, Pa, a son of Gilbert and Lillie Rainey McKnight.
On December 22, 1944, Walter entered the United States Army. He served during World War II with his tour of duty including the Philippines and Korea. He served in the Infantry 185th Regiment and the 85th signal core as a sharpshooter. He earned the sharpshooter medallion and was honorably discharged from the military on November 29, 1946.
Walter and Doris "Mickey" McCall were united in marriage on December 7, 1944 at United Presbyterian Church in Grove City, Pa.
Mack was employed at Rockwell in Newton Falls, OH as an electrician for 28 years until the plant closed. He retired from Chrysler in Twinsburg, OH at age 63. His retirement allowed him to spend more time riding his horse, which was a life-long passion.
Memories of Walter will be carried on by his son, William McKnight of Lordstown; his daughters, Brenda McKnight of Leavittsburg and Bonnie (Jim) O'Connell of Warren; grandson, Shawn (Sue) of Howland; granddaughter, Samantha (Steve) Beltrondo of Cuyahoga Falls; and three great-grandchildren, Emily and Kyle O'Connell and Gianna Beltrondo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mickey McKnight, four brothers, and one sister.
The Rev. Oakes will officiate a service to be held at the Lordstown Christian Church, Rt. 45, Lordstown, Ohio at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2009.
Interment will be in Lordstown Community Cemetery.
