Wallace Charles Grist, Jr. 78 POLAND âa�" Services will be at Cunningham Becker Funeral Home, Poland Chapel for Wallace Charles Grist, Jr. 78 of Poland who passed Monday evening at the family home. Mr. Grist was native American Indian of the Oneida/Onondaga Nations of Canada with the name of Day Yah So Weh Ghe which means Tall Double Pines in relationship to his birth place. Mr. Grist was born Jan. 24, 1928 in Poland a son of Wallace Charles and Georgia Ann Summers Grist, Sr. and was a lifelong area resident. He was the owner and operator of the Grist Painting and Decorating for the past 56 years. He was the Executive Director of the Ohio American Indian Council Incorporated for 24 years, was a native cultural speaker, dancer and flag bearer and had the honor of carrying the American, Canadian and his nations flag, was a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corp and a World War II veteran where he served in China and played football in the Marines, was a decorated member of the first Poland Seminary High School football team and played professionally for the Cleveland Browns and was an avid golfer and loved to garden. Mr. Grist is survived by his wife the former, Myrtle Marie Hindes whom he married Dec. 25, 1950; a daughter, Victoria Ann Summers, and son in law Charles L. Smith of Oneida, Ohio; two sons, Mark Andrew (Grace Kisel) Grist of Poland and Michael Grist of Akron; a sister Eileen Hopper of Prescott Valley, Ariz; two brothers, Samuel Grist of Tavares, Florida and Alfred Grist of Grand Ronde Oregon; five grandchildren, Ryan and Kelly Nicole Grist of Austintown, Brandon, Zachary and Autumn Grist of Akron. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Valerie Erin Grist and a grandson. Family and friends may call from 5:00 âa�" 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, Private services will be held Saturday at the funeral home.
