Salem - Virginia "Ginny" L. Chalky, 80, formerly of Columbiana, died Thursday afternoon, March 5, 2015 at her home.
Virginia, affectionately known as "Ginny," was born May 14, 1934 in Youngstown, a daughter of Findley and Eva Wells Johnston.
She was a 1952 graduate of Canfield High School. Ginny first worked at the candy counter at Woolworth's from 1961 to 1963 and later as a manger for the Isaly's in Boardman from 1963 to 1978. She retired as a teller from Home Savings & Loan, after 25 years of service.
Ginny enjoyed traveling with her husband, making annual trips to Florida, going on bus tours, and cruises. She had a soft heart for animals and loved to read, always having a book close to hand.
Her husband, William H. Chalky, whom she married March 17, 1951, preceded her in death on November 29, 1995. She is survived by her son, William R. (Roberta) Chalky of Boardman; daughter, Cathy (Wayne) Dickey of Salem; two brothers, Walter Johnston of Lisbon and Arthur (Dorothy) Johnston of St. Charles, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Jonathan (Melissa) Chalky of Canfield, Jason (Brandy) Chalky of Youngstown, Michael W. Algaier, David (Jami Grace) Algaier, and Shawn (Sheila) Algaier, all of Salem, Michele (Ron) Poland of Industry, PA, Joshua (Tammy) Dickey of Columbiana, and Elizabeth (Jonathan) Absher of Knoxville, TN; 18 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband and parents, Ginny was preceded in death by her son, Michael Chalky and five siblings.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral, 8536 Market St., Boardman, with Pastor Bob Quaintance officiating. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Family and friends will be received on Monday from 3-3:45 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
