GAINESVILLE, FLA. - Violet L. Karstetter, commonly known as "Mickey," passed away on Oct. 5, 2010, in Gainesville.
She was born on Jan. 16, 1928, in Dubois, Pa., and married Howard (Bud) E. Karstetter of Altoona, Pa., in 1948.
Mickey moved to Youngstown in 1950 with her husband and after a few years, they bought a home in Struthers, where she and Bud began raising their three children, Karen, David and Brian.
In 1968, they moved to Boardman, and lived there until Bud passed away in 1988. They were well known as the owners of The Western Reserve Family Restaurant in Boardman.
Violet then moved to Florida for eight years, Ohio for 10 years and lived the last two years with her daughter in Gainesville.
Mickey was a devoted wife and loving mother, who will always be cherished and remembered by her children and those that knew her.
She had beautiful blue eyes that twinkled when she smiled, which was often. She had a sense of humor and even in her final years when her speech became difficult, she smiled and laughed often.
Best known for her outstanding cooking and baking, she loved to prepare food for her family and any additional company that was lucky enough to show up for dinner. Her home was always a joy to be in and especially during her favorite holiday which was Christmas. She would spend weeks decorating and freezing her Christmas cookies in preparation of all the family coming together. Family was the most meaningful part of her life.
She will be missed by so many people, family and friends. This last year, Violet enjoyed her days at Al'z Place in Gainesville, where she sang, danced and was loved by so many.
Violet was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Howard E. Karstetter; her parents, Gail and Lillias (Harvey) Emerick; the aunt and uncle who raised her, Violet (Harvey) and Harry Hildebran; and five brothers and sisters.
She has three surviving children, Karen Karstetter McCann of Gainesville, David Karstetter of Newark, Ohio and Brian Karstetter (Julia) of Cromwell, Conn. She adored her 10 grandchildren, who also survive her. Her grandchildren are, Shannon Weingart (Dave), Ryan McCann, Megan McCann Hazzard (Eric) and David, Danielle, Kyle, Kaitlin, Maggie, McKenzie and Bryce Karstetter. She also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, whom she dearly loved, Andrew and Nicholas Weingart. She has two surviving brothers, Kenneth and Richard Emerick of Erie, Pa.
