Boardman - Viola Jean Docherty, 90, of Boardman, died Friday, November 28, 2008 at Hudson Elms Nursing Home in Hudson, Ohio. Mrs. Docherty was born March 6, 1918 in Youngstown, a daughter of Stanley and Louise Ocars Sovak. Mrs. Docherty was a chairman of the Red Cross Volunteers at the Southside Hospital for 13 years, a past board member of the Mahoning County Chapter of the American Red Cross, a member of the American Business Women's Association, past member of the Gold Torch Chapter, and a member of the Humane Society of the U.S.A. She was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church. Mrs. Docherty was a 1936 graduate of South High School and attended Youngstown College. Her husband, John H. Docherty, whom she married August 26, 1939 died September 16, 1994. Mrs. Docherty leaves two sons, John J. (Pamela) Docherty of Kent and Richard C. Docherty of Burlington, VT; three grandchildren, Patricia (Barry) Gibson of Key West, Florida, Susan (Daniel) McLaughlin of San Francisco, and Kara Docherty of Missoula, Montana; and three great-grandchildren, Daniel and Andrew McLaughlin and Taylor Gibson. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Docherty was preceded in death by infant daughter, Patty Lou Docherty; her brother, Joseph Sovak; and two sisters, Stella Cartwright and Susan Moran. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 8:45 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and 9:30 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church with Father Joseph Fata officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown. Friends will be received Monday, December 8, 2008 from 4 -7 p.m. at the funeral home.
