Vernon W. Symes, 87 Youngstown- Vernon W. Symes, 87, of 4547 Simon Road, formerly of Poland died Thursday morning at Northside Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Symes was born May 20, 1915 in Cleveland, a son of the late Salem and Lorna Kurth Symes. He grew up and attended school in Parma, and has been an area resident since 1960. He was employed by Trans Parts Incorporated, where he worked as a salesman retiring in 1980 after many years. Mr. Symes was a U.S. Naval veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal,, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. Mr. Symes was a member of the Poland United Methodist Church, where he was active as a member of the Menâa�a��s Prayer Group where he served as the groupâa�a��s pianist. He also volunteered at Northside Hospital until recently, where he delivered mail to patients. He was also a gifted pianist who could play by ear. He leaves two daughters: Gail and her husband Ray Humble of North Royalton and Deborah and her husband C. Anthony Harding of Youngstown; a brother: James of South Carolina; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 1 great great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his wife the former Ida Mae Phillips, whom he married June 6, 1936, and who died October 9, 2002; a daughter: Dorothy Kraizel; a sister: June Abrams; and two brothers: Gordon and William Symes. A funeral service will be held Monday at 1PM at the Poland United Methodist Church.
