Thomas Richards

Thomas Richards, 88, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Tom was born July 4, 1935 in New Castle, PA, a son of the late Carl Richards and Helen Scopio.  

He graduated from New Castle High School.  After high school, Tom served in the U.S. Marines Corps for four years during the Korean Conflict at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. 

After his time in the service, Tom returned to the Youngstown area and graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor's degree and  a Master's degree in education. 

He was a financial aid consultant at Youngstown State University for over 30 years, retiring in 2000.  

Tom was a devoted husband, father, and brother.  In his free time, Tom enjoyed traveling, especially on cruise ships, motorcycle riding, snow skiing, and  playing golf at Myrtle Beach with his fraternity brothers. 

Tom will be sadly missed by his wife of 33 years, the former Judith Maldonado, whom he married on August 26, 1990; a son, Thomas J.(Wendy) Richards of Farrell, PA; brother, Denny (Carol) Richards of New Castle, PA; three brothers-in-law, George (Enid) Maldonado, Israel (Isa) Maldonado, and Jose (Cynthia) Maldonado; a sister-in-law, Lily (Andy) Gomez; and his fraternity brothers at Youngstown State University.   

Per Tom's request, there will be a private celebration of life service for his family.  There are no calling hours.   Interment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio with full military honors.  

The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 979 Tibbetts Wick Road, Girard, OH 44420 in memory of Tom. 

Arrangements are being handled by Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street in Boardman.
