Poland - Thomas Joseph Maskell, 64, of Poland, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 4th, at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House.
Tom was born on November 19, 1945 in Nyack, NY, a son of LeRoy Maskell and Katharine Ottaviano. He was raised in Nyack, NY and came to Niles in 1975 and to Poland in 1979.
He was a 1963 graduate of Nyack High School and, with a New York Board of Regents Scholarship, he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University in 1967. (He always said he accomplished in four years what took most students six.) He went on to earn his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Dayton in 1974.
Always the Renaissance Man, Tom had time to develop multiple board games and patents during his years as a Ceramic Engineer and General Manager. He spent some of his "retirement years" as a Business Consultant for many small companies and manufacturers. He was also a columnist for Stocks and Commodities Magazine, Ceramic Industry and the Ceramic Bulletin and a regular contributor to the editorial section of the Youngstown Vindicator. In 2008, Tom fulfilled his lifelong goal of becoming a published author with the release of his book, "The Complete Guide to Investing During Retirement. "
He was a member of Holy Family Church in Poland and an ever present member of the Poland Community, joyfully attending decades of class plays, band concerts, and school programs as well as countless football, baseball, basketball and soccer games.
Tom leaves his daughter, Jaime Maskell; fiancée, Cynthia Barie of Robinson Township, PA; former wife, Elaine Maskell of Boardman; two sisters, Jean Ann (Richard) Frank and Lorraine Dougherty, both of NY; and one brother, LeRoy Maskell of NJ, as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends of many years from across the country, especially the Palm, Terek, Roman, Meyer, Van Buren and Hamrock Families.
Tom's life will be celebrated in a Funeral Mass at Holy Family Church in Poland on Friday January 8th, at 10:00am, officiated by Fr. Kevin McCarthy and Pastor Nathan Doyle. Following the Mass, friends are welcome to join the family for a brief Graveside Internment service at the Poland Riverside Cemetery and a celebration memorial lunch at Glenwood Christian Fellowship, 7872 Glenwood Avenue, Boardman.
Friends will be received Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home Poland, where there will also be a prayer service Friday at 9:15 a.m prior to the Funeral Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that friends make memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, Ohio 44514 in appreciation for the extreme kindness and care that the nurses and staff provided to Tom and his family during his final days.
In Tom's own words: "I've had a good life and I could not have asked for anything more."
