Thomas J. Ferrara, 79
Poland - Thomas J. Ferrara, 79, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, April 23, 2021 at his home.
Thomas, known by his family and friends as "Tom," was born July 2, 1941 in Youngstown, the son of the late Daniel V. and Marcella (Barton) Ferrara.
He attended East High School and later transferred to Hubbard High School, graduating in 1959. Tom graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics and from Penn State with a Master's degree in education.
He was a mathematics teacher for Boardman Local Schools, teaching at the high school for 35 years, retiring in 1999. Tom also was the boys high school baseball coach for several years and was very proud when his team went to State in 1967. He also taught night classes at Youngstown State University. After retiring from teaching, Tom started working for the Ohio Turnpike, as a toll booth clerk, working the East Gate exit for 11 years, retiring on July 9, 2010.
Tom was an avid Yankee, Cleveland Browns and Ohio State fan. He enjoyed going to casinos and spending time with his family
Tom is survived by his three grandchildren, Michael A. Colangelo of Poland, Maria Gabriele (Brian ) Basilon of Struthers, and Miranda R. (Andrea) Colangelo of Petersburg, VA; two great-grandchildren, Paul M. Colangelo, and Anthony T. Basilon; his sister, Linda (Dave) Gascon of CA.
Besides his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, the former Roseanne M. Diorio, whom he married on June 13, 1964 and died May 23, 2012; a daughter, Michele Ferrara; and his two brothers, Carl Ferrara and Daniel Ferrara; and his four-legged companion, Tyson.
Due to COVID-19 and Tom's request, there was a private graveside service on Thursday, April 29, 2021, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville with Deacon Mark Izzo officiating.
There are no calling hours.
The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to Angels for Animals, 4750 W. South Range Road, Canfield, OH 44406 or to the Mahoning County Dog Pound, 1230 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, OH 44509 in memory of Tom.
Arrangements are being handled by Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main Street in Poland.
