Award winning journalist and natural health and energy medicine researcher Susan R. (Recklies) Schell of Cleveland died Sunday June 8, 2014 surrounded by family. She was 57.

A recipient of numerous Associated Press Awards for community service and breaking news, Schell was born July 25, 1956 in Youngstown, Oh., a daughter of the late Rudolph Recklies and Virginia Recklies. A graduate of Canfield High School, she attended the Kent State University School of Journalism, while working for the Morning Journal.

She later joined the East Liverpool, Oh. based Evening Review as a reporter and became the newspaper's first woman city editor.

Schell went on to work for the Canton Repository as a copy editor, staff writer and education writer, winning a number of awards for her coverage of state and national education issues.

Schell was also a freelance writer and founder of Great Lakes Writing. In recent years, she served as managing editor for Dermatology Times magazine and Cosmetic Surgery Times magazine.

In addition to her writing career, she was a long time researcher in the fields of natural health and energy medicine. She studied yoga, meditation, chi gung and Tai Chi Chuan as well as other health practices from various traditions around the world.

Her encyclopedic knowledge of nutrition, energy medicine and natural health practices allowed her to overcome multiple sclerosis, which she was diagnosed with in 1999. She freely shared her knowledge with others, helping them to enjoy more vibrant and healthy lives.

She also enjoyed gardening and was an avid amateur astronomer.

She is survived by her partner, William VandenBoom of Kent, a daughter, Lauren Schell of New York City, her mother, Virginia Recklies of Columbiana, and a brother, Christopher Recklies of Northeast, Oh.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rudolph and a brother, David.
