Steven J. Zurkey, 81 Poland- Steven J. Zurkey, 81, of 2227 Venloe Avenue, died Sunday morning at Forum Northside Hospital. Mr. Zurkey was born May 6, 1921, in Youngstown a son of the late Stephen and Helen Palocy Zurkey. He was a 1939 graduate of South High School and a lifelong area resident. Since 1981 he and his wife spent 6 months of the year at their Florida home in New Port Richey, FL. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a Technical Sargent, stationed in North Africa for three years, with the 3156th Signal Service Company. He retired as Sales Manager from Ohio Bell Telephone, in 1981 after 40 years of service. A member of the Poland Presbyterian Church, he served as a deacon. He was also a former member of Austintown Rotary, and the Telephone Pioneers of America, and Boy Scouts of America. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. In 1993, while attending the 50th reunion of the 3156th Signal Service Company, he along with the other sergeants from the unit were commissioned Kentucky Colonels. Besides his wife the former Joan C. Peters whom he married March 8, 1947, he leaves a daughter: Ellen Todd of New Port Richey, FL; two sons: William P. of Poland; Robert D. and daughter-in-law Patricia of Cincinnati; a sister: Alice Staffend of Cincinnati; a brother: William L. Zurkey of Boardman; and three grandchildren: Steven Zurkey; Emily and Sarah Todd. He is preceded in death by a son: S. Richard; and sister: Irene Fazekas. A memorial service will be held 2PM Wednesday at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice of the Valley, or to the charity of the donorâa�a��s choice.
