Poland - Steven John Helvak, 81 of Poland, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at the Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Mr. Helvak was born June 22, 1929 in Campbell, a son of John and Mary Machupa Helvak.
He was a 1947 graduate of Struthers High School . Mr. Helvak serviced in the United States Air Force, during the Korean Conflict, where he served in Okinawa and the Philippians. After his return home he received his bachelors and masters degree from Kent State University . He was a member of the Bessemer Croatian Club, the SNPJ #770, the ACC Club in Youngstown ; Mr. Helvak retired in 1991 from the Struthers High School . He loved carpentry work and always kept himself busy. He loved buying tools, watching football and loved to read.
He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Puz, whom he married June 9, 1956, two sons, Mark (Donna) Helvak of Woodbridge, VA and John Helvak of Poland; two daughters, Vicki (John) Ziegler of Grayson, GA and Joann (Russell) Thompson of Poland, OH; nine grandchildren, Paul Bazzano, Ashley Helvak, Sarah Thompson, Amanda Thompson, Richard Thompson, Savanna Ziegler, Michael Ziegler, Stevie Helvak, and Mallory Hanley.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Mitchell Hanley, two sisters, Katherine Budrovic, and Olga Helvak, and one brother, Joseph Helvak.
Private services will be held today.
Arrangements are being handled by the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland .
