Struthers - Stephen A. Miner, 84, died early Wednesday morning, September 17, 2014 at the Cleveland Clinic.
Mr. Miner was born July 30, 1930 in Struthers, a son Stephen and Anna Granchie Miner.
A lifelong resident of Struthers, Mr. Miner was a 1949 graduate of Struthers High School. He worked as a foreman for Youngstown Sheet & Tube/LTV, retiring in 1977.
A proud veteran with a love for his country, Mr. Miner served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. In his retirement, he continued to fulfill his lifetime commitment to his country and the United States Air Force, dedicating much of his time to local veteran's organizations. Mr. Miner was a life member of VFW Post No. 3538 in Struthers, where he served as Commander for over 20 years and currently as their Quartermaster and Canteen Manager. He also held various positions over the years with the VFW District 8 of Ohio, including serving as past Commander from 88'-89' and was also a past Commander of the former Mahoning County Council.
Mr. Miner was also honored with the "Veteran of the Year" award in 1990 by Senator Robert Hagan, and in 1989 was recognized with a proclamation from the mayor of Warren, Ohio for his service to the VFW where Saturday, April 22, 1989 was deemed "Commander Stephen A. Miner Day." He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, the American Order of the Cooties, Pup Tent No. 31, and was currently serving as a commissioner of the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. Mr. Miner also served as a councilman for the City of Struthers in the early 60's.
He was a current member of Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church and a previous member of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara H. Biroschak, whom he married August 31, 1957; a daughter, Christine (Robert) Franz of Columbus; a son, Stephen (Pam) Miner of Wapakoneta; three grandchildren, Matthew Miner, Kaitlyn (Steve) Niehaus, and Stephen Miner; four step-grandchildren, Brittany and Ashley Franz, Mandy (Brian) Brownlee, and Bill Holby; and two great-grandchildren, Layla and Tucker Niehaus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Andy and Bill Miner.
A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St., Struthers, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
