Stanley Mason Hewitt, a long time resident of Youngstown’s west side and a resident of Ohio Living Park Vista for the last 8 years passed away on July 4, 2019. He was born on January 16, 1921 in Youngstown, Ohio, the only child of McLain Shehy and Florence Fitch Hewitt and was a direct descendant of Youngstown pioneer Daniel Shehy.
Upon graduation from Chaney High School in 1939, Stan enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. where he achieved the rank of Master Sargent. He trained as an Aviation Mock-Up Developer at Chanute Field, IL and was later transferred to the newly opened Keesler Field Air Base in Biloxi, MS. In 1945 he served in the Pacific Theater, returning to Biloxi at the end of his tour.
While stationed at Keesler he met the love of his life, Bobbie Nell Carter. After a courtship of less than one month, they were married on November 29, 1941. Stan always said that it was love at first sight. Bobbie, his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, passed away on September 2, 2011.
In 1947 Stan brought his young family back to the Rhoda Avenue home on them westside of Youngstown in which he had grown up. He enjoyed a long career as a design engineer for US Steel, Ohio Work, retiring in 1978. He was also very proud of his architectural work. Homes that he designed stand in Youngstown, Poland, Boardman, and Pittsburgh.
For many years Stan and his wife pursued their passion for travel and visited most of the Eastern United States. After retiring, they divided their time between their homes in Youngstown and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Throughout his years, Stan maintained friendships with many of the people he met during their travels. Ill health brought an end to their travels in 2000 and they returned, permanently, to Youngstown.
A devoted husband and father, Stan leaves his 3 daughters and their families with wonderful memories to cherish. His family includes daughters Barbara (Bernard) Cardarelli of Struthers, OH, Linda (Philip) Hulewat of Henderson, NV, and Phyllis (Tom) Murphy of Punta Gorda, FL; 9 grandchildren: Cheryl (Rodney) Deloe, Rebecca (Brad Symbolik) Crago, Melissa (Rob) Bloomberg, Michael Cardarelli, Melinda Hayes, Margaret (Kyle) Sheridan, John Murphy, Rochelle (Bill) Bahny, Brian (Holly) Hulewat; 11 great-grandchildren: Vincent and Jessica Crago, Zachary and Bryce Deloe, Alexis and Lauren Vukovich and their sister Abigail Bloomberg, Jenna and Carter Hayes, and Samantha and Ryan Sheridan; and two great great grandchildren, Heidi Marie who was born on his birthday in 2019, and Dex Allen, born May 30.
Our thanks to the very special people at Ohio Living Park Vista and Ohio Living Hospice who took such loving care of Dad and who treated us with respect. Over the 8 years that Stan resided at Park Vista you became an extension of our family for which we are grateful.
The family suggest that memorial contributions be made to any of the local charities that Stan believed in and supported: Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice, and The Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley.
Arrangements are being handled by the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers. As per Mr. Hewitt’s directive, there will be no calling hours or services. Interment will take place at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
