Stanley J. Pogacnik

Poland - Stanley J. Pogacnik, 94, of Poland, formerly of Hamilton Blvd., Struthers, died early Wednesday morning at Northside Hospital, Valley Care.

Stan was born October 27, 1917 in Struthers, a son of John and Frances Zitnik Pogacnik.

Stan attended Struthers High School and left to support his family by working at the Youngstown Foundry and Machine Company. In 1943, while working for Youngstown Foundry, Stan enlisted in the United States Navy serving in World War II, in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He received both the Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Stan returned to the area, and to Youngstown Foundry, which later became Wean United. He retired as General Superintendent of Operations for Wean United in 1980 after 46 years of service.

Stan was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish, St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, Struthers, the Struthers VFW Post #3538 and it's golf league. Stan was an avid golfer and in his lifetime, Stan accomplished nine hole-in-ones.

Stan was a friend to everyone he met and a helper to all who needed help. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Stan's wife, the former Margaret "Peggy" Petkunas, whom he married February 17, 1947 died February 25, 2010; he leaves one daughter, Pat (Ron) Janci of Sarasota Fl., and Hudson, OH; two grandchildren, Karen (Nathan) Hagan of Aurora, OH and Laura (Chris) Meeks of Green River, WY; one great-granddaughter, Nia Rae Hagan; and one sister, Dorothy Lucarell of Youngstown.

Besides his parents and wife, Stan was preceded in death by four brothers, Lou, Steve, John, and Andy Pogacnik; and one sister, Mary Pogacnik.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, 10:30 am at Christ Our Savior Parish, Holy Trinity Church, 250 N. Bridge Street, Struthers, with Fr. Bernard Bonnot officiating. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Friends will be received Saturday from 8:30 am until 10:15 am at the church.
