Sheila Massie was considered a hero by many for triumphing over pancreatic cancer in 2000. Although she fought like a champion when this disease struck again in 2019, angels escorted her home on July 18, 2019.
Sheila leaves behind John Massie, the love of her life who was her high school sweetheart and dedicated husband of nearly 50 years; two lovely daughters, Melissa (Barry) Mick, and Christie (Renny) Wilmer; and five grandchildren, Colin, Cameron, and Carter Mick and Grant and Max Wilmer, who were her pride and joy. Others blessed by her presence in their lives are her brother Daryl (Linda) Plant; sister, Barbara Landahl; brother-in-law, Joe Massie, and sister-in-law and childhood best friend, Linda Massie; sisters-in-law, Janet (Steve) Rovnak and Diane Herdman; several nieces and nephews; and numerous good friends.
Meeting her at the gates of heaven are her parents, Thomas and Dorothy Plant; grandparents, Leon and Stella Altenderfer; and grandparents, Pearly and Sara Jane Plant.
Sheila graduated valedictorian of Wilson High School where she spread joy as a majorette. She then graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1969 and was a surgical nurse for 35 years at Mercy Health.
As a dedicated member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Sheila helped lead others to worship our Savior by singing in the church choir. St. Augustine of Hippo is credited in saying, “he who sings, prays twice.” So, there is no doubt that Sheila has now joyfully joined the heavenly choir of angels and saints.
In addition to church, Sheila enjoyed crafts, traveling, and card club, but she especially loved golf. While a talented golfer, her love for the sport rose out of socializing with friends.
Sheila was a strong supporter of other pancreatic cancer patients through leading support groups and attending fundraisers. When asked how one deals with cancer, Sheila advised, “let the doctors do their part, you do your part, and let God do his part.”
May all who grieve her death honor her by remembering the words of our Lord in John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
A Memorial Service celebrating Sheila’s life will be held Monday, 11:00 a.m. at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church with Pastor Rebecca Zielke officiating. Friends may call Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, Boardman and Monday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service.
If desired, contributions can be made to Lord of Life Lutheran Church (organ fund) at 550 N Broad St. Canfield, Ohio, 44406.
