Youngstown - Samuel J. "Buzzo" Mangine, 83, formerly of Lowellville, died September 3, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
Mr. Mangine, known by many as "Buzzo," was born February 11, 1931 in Lowellville, a son of Joseph and Leodina Coppola Mangine.
A lifelong resident of the Youngstown area, he was a 1950 graduate of Lowellville High School. A standout athlete, Mr. Mangine played football, baseball, and basketball for the Lowellville Rockets and received the distinguished honor of being an "All Ohio" basketball player. He received four letters in all, earning him a football scholarship, and later the honor of being elected into the Lowellville Football Hall of Fame.
He played for Vanderbilt University on scholarship for a year and a half and then enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1951. Serving during the Korean Conflict, he was honorably discharged in November of 1953 with the rank of Private. Upon his return home, he attended Youngstown College for one year. Mr. Mangine then worked for Republic Steel for 10 years as a blacksmith helper and retired as a manager from Gray's Drug Store after 23 years of service.
In his free time, he enjoyed golfing and bowling, belonging to the Pyramid and All-Star Bowling Leagues. He was also a member of the Mt. Carmel Society.
His wife, the former Dianna M. Kavaky, whom he married March 19, 1956, died May 3, 1990. He is survived by his daughter, Susan (Pete Retort) Powell of Lowellville; a son, Joseph (Laura) Mangine of Youngstown; and two grandchildren, Christine Powell and Antonio Mangine.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Mangine was preceded in death by a brother, Patrick Mangine; and two sisters, Lucille Donatelli and infant Adaline Mangine.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 244 McGill St. in Lowellville, where family and friends will be received Monday from 5:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
