Poland - Salvadore "Sal" A. Guappone, 83, of Poland, died Friday, February 8, 2008 at Hampton Woods Nursing Center. Sal was born May 4, 1924 in Salem, the son of Joseph and Felicia Ferrara Guappone. A 1942 graduate of Salem High School, Sal went on to receive his bachelor's degree in education from the Youngstown College and his master's degree from Westminster College. Sal worked as a math teacher for Poland Union, Poland Seminary High School, and Struthers High School, where he worked for 27 years. He retired in 1988 after 37 years of teaching. An avid sports fan, Sal was an assistant football coach at Poland Seminary High School and head coach for the Struthers High School boy's basketball team. Sal was a United States Army veteran, serving in Germany during WWII and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Holy Family Church in Poland, where he was an usher. His other memberships included the National Education Association and the Ohio Education Association. Sal was a founding member of the Poland Little Bulldogs Association, which is a little league association, and was inducted into it's Hall of Fame. Sal leaves his wife, the former Muriel Webb, whom he married October 13, 1945 in England; his daughter, Lori (Rob) Becker of Columbus; three sons, Dennis (Gayle) Guappone of Boston, Craig (Barbara) Guappone of Tallmadge, and Kenneth Guappone of Portland, Oregon; a sister, Grace Preston of Arizona; two granddaughters, Kristen and Cara Guappone; and three grandsons, David, Brian, and Michael Guappone. Besides his parents, Sal was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Michael Guappone; and three sisters, Minnie Gardner, Antoinette Smith, aned Mary Parlantieri. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church with Rev. Msgr. William J. Connell officiating. Interment will follow in the Poland Riverside Cemetery. Friends will be received Sunday from 5-8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, where a prayer service will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Sal's name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St. Boardman, OH 44512.
