RUTH A. (WIETELMANN) SMITH
Ruth Smith, long-time resident of Poland, died on August 6, 2018. She was 92.
Ruth was born in Zanesville, OH on June 10, 1926, daughter of John and Helen (Jewell) Wietelmann. She was raised in Zanesville, Struthers, Poland and Youngstown and was a June 6, 1944 graduate of Wilson High School. Ruth worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube and Agler’s Insurance Company. She married Daniel R. Smith on October 15, 1948. They built a house on Marion Drive in Poland and raised five children there.
Ruth was an active scout leader, youth group leader, band parent, choir director and church organist. She served Bethlehem UCC in Brownlee Woods (now Faith Community Covenant Church) as organist and sometime choir director for over 65 years. One can hope that many generations will have carried on the fun of singing "Rise and Shine" due to her influence! She also served as adult Sunday School teacher, VBS leader, Church Consistory President, and created many programs for various church groups. Ruth also served as office manager for Poland Countryside Furniture for many years. Her smile and joy in all she did will be remembered by all who knew her. Her family will remember her love, her smile and her pies!
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Danny; her son Dale; her sisters Eleanor Schmidt and Florence Sopko; and an infant brother, John Frederick Wietelmann. She leaves her sister Dorothy McClelland of Boardman; her children, D. Ray Smith of New Springfield, Cindy Smith Howard of Tallmadge, Gary Smith (Beth) of Petersburg, and Scott Smith of New Orleans, LA; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; as well as many cousins and nieces and nephews.
