Youngstown - Ruth Luce, 91, formerly of Hubbard Township, died Friday morning, August 10, 2012 at Omni West Assisted Living.
Ruth was born November 30, 1920 in Struthers, a daughter of Harry and Maude (Douds) Mallery.
She was a 1938 graduate of Struthers High School. Prior to her marriage, she was employed by Pennsylvania Railroad in the reservation office and by Dollar Bank as a teller. She married, Merlin Luce, on December 7, 1944, at the Struthers Presbyterian Church. Ruth was a dedicated homemaker and an excellent cook. In the 1970's, she returned to the workforce for General Electric as a coil machine operator.
She was a lifelong member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church, where she was a children's Sunday School Teacher and a member of its Fireside Class. She was also an active member of the Youngstown Peace Council, the Seniors for Peace, the American Civil Liberties Union, and a former member of the NAACP, and was a Girl Scout in her youth.
Ruth had a passion for the outdoors. In her spare time, she enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and was an amateur botanist, enjoying all types of plants, flowers, and nature.
She and Merlin celebrated 63 years of marriage prior to his death on December 23, 2007. She is survived by two sons, Charles (Leslie) Luce of Weehawken, NJ and Danny Luce of New York City; daughter, Ruth Alice Luce of Findley Lake, New York; granddaughter, Brianna Luce of South Tahoe Lake, CA; and sister-in-law, Betty Mallery of Texas.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Settle and Uretta Stover; and two brothers, William and Orlo Mallery.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Struthers Presbyterian Church with Rev. Thomas Fennell and Rev. Dick Ferris co-officiating. Interment will be at Lake Park Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at the church, prior to the service.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Ruth's name to the Tribute and Legacy Giving Program, Mill Creek Metro Parks, PO Box 596, Canfield, Ohio 44406, in honor of her love of nature.
