Ruth E. Burkey

Ruth E. Burkey, 89, died Thursday morning, October 26, 2017 at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland.
She was born on May 30, 1928 in Youngstown, daughter of Fred and Alverda (Souder) Burkey. Ruth went to Jackson Elementary School, Struthers High School, and graduated from South High School. She earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from Capital University in 1950, and received her teaching certificate after attending YSU. Ruth later completed her Masters of Education Degree in 1960 at Kent State University.
She taught piano lessons at Yarling and Raynor before teaching at Jackson and Paul C. Bunn Elementary Schools in Youngstown. Ruth also taught one year in a U.S. Army school in Mannheim, Germany.
She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Struthers and was currently a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman.
Ruth leaves a sister-in-law, Mary Burkey, and three nephews, Charles II, Thomas, and John Burkey and their families. She also leaves her dear friend, Dorothea Lipp, with whom she shared a home.
Her parents, brothers, Donald and Charles, a niece, Miriam, and nephew, Bruce, preceded her in death.
Per Ruth's request, there will be no calling hours or services. Interment will be at Columbiana Cemetery.
