Ruth Brill, 91, of Poland, OH., passed away peacefully at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman on Monday, November 4th,2013.
Ruth was born on April 10, 1922, in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania to Forest and Carrie Keefer Swearman. She will be buried beside her husband of 64 years, Robert W. Brill at Riverside Cemetery in Poland.
Ruth was a 1939 graduate of Meyersdale High School and a decorated WWII veteran. She enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in New York City on Feb 10, 1944. She completed basic training at the Third WAC training center a Ft. Oglethorpe, GA. On Nov 19, 1944 she boarded the SS Monterey out of San Francisco enroute to her assignment in the Office of Theater Censor at Hollandia, New Guinea. Later she transferred to Biak to work in the Office of Base Censor, located on the equator, then onto Leyte, PI where she participated in the dedication of a military cemetery. Ruth's work with the Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment took her to Manilla, where she was discharged on December 7,1945, and then reinstated into the War Department, Civil Service, for duty in the Occupation of Japan.
Ruth's military awards include the Good Conduct medal, four Bronze Stars, the Asiatic-Pacific Service medal, the Philippine Liberation medal, and the World War II Victory medal.
Before and after Ruth's enlistment, she was employed by the War Department. Her civilian service took her to Washington, DC where she worked in the Adjutant General's Office, the Secret and Confidential Files Section, and then to Newark, NJ where she was chief clerk in the Office of Dependency Benefits and Communication Branch.
After WWII, Ruth and Robert settled in Youngstown where they both attended Youngstown College. From 1968 until 1976 Ruth was employed in the Selective Service Office in Youngstown.
Ruth was a member of Heritage Presbyterian Church, a charter member of Women in Military Service for America, and the National WWII museum, a member of American Legion Post 15, member of NARFE and a Railroad Auxiliary member of YOMA Lodge.
She was preceded in death by Robert, who passed away in 2006, her parents, and sisters Evelyn Rice, Esther Testa and Estelle Neel.
Ruth leaves her four lovely daughters; Candace (William) Frech,Sr., Carol Ann Brill, Cathy Brill(Michael DeCecca), and Carla (Michael) Waters; three grandchildren; William Frech, Jr, Katie and Melinda DeCecca; and sister Doris Jean Moore.
Funeral service will be held 1:30PM on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland. Friends can be received from 12:30 to 1:15 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
