Van Wert, Ohio - Russell D. Jennings, 96, formerly of Boardman, died Thursday morning, May 7, 2015 at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.
Mr. Jennings was born May 28, 1918 in Youngstown, a son of George and Lillian Nichols Jennings. Russell lived in the Youngstown area until moving to Van Wert 16 years ago.
Mr. Jennings was a graduate of Chaney High School and attended Youngstown College. He worked as a machine shop superintendent for Republic Steel, Truscon Division, retiring after 38 years of service.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Jennings served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in January of 1946 with the rank of Fireman First Class.
While living in Boardman, he was a charter member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, and a current member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Van Wert.
Mr. Jennings had a love for sports and refereed high school football from 1960 to 1967. He was also very active at one time in Junior Achievement and enjoyed the camaraderie with his fellow employees while golfing in the Truscon Golf League.
His wife, the former Sallymae Knuth, whom he married October 17, 1944, died April 8, 1998. He is survived by his daughter, Sara (Bob) Hughes of Van Wert; son, Gary (Cindy Stevens) Jennings of Boardman; four grandchildren, Ryan Jennings of Long Beach, CA, Rob Hughes of Van Wert, Kevin Jennings of Dallas, TX, and Amanda (James) Speiser of Sylvania, OH; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Jennings was preceded in death by his two sisters, Violet Thompson and Lillian Brammer; and two brothers, George and David Jennings.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman, where family and friends will be received Monday from 10-10:45 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
