Russell D. Beatty Sr., 85
POLAND - Russell D. Beatty Sr., 85, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 29, 2015, at his residence.
Mr. Beatty was born Aug. 19, 1930, in Bessemer, Pa., a son of Raymond and Mary "Olivine" Hoffman Beatty. He was raised in Struthers and resided in Poland for 58 years.
A 1948 graduate of Struthers High School, "Russ" attended Miami University for two and a half years, before transferring to Kent State, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Architecture in 1954. He was a member of Phi Kapp Tau Alpha chapter.
Russ worked at numerous architect companies in the area, including Smith & Associated Architects in Columbiana, before purchasing the company with a partner. He later opened his own company called Russell D. Beatty & Associates in Poland in 1989.
He was a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He served in the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal.
Russ was a member of the Poland Lodge F.&A.M. No. 766 and a 32nd degree Mason of the York and Scottish Rite, former member of Al Koran Shrine and the North Lima Shrine Club, lifetime member of the Marine Corps League, member of the Poland Forest Board, a chairman on the Architectural Review Board of Poland Village, former member of Columbiana Rotary Club, and a former member of the Optimist Club in Poland. A longtime resident of Poland, Mr. Beatty was given the honor of being the Poland Parade marshall in 2015. He was a lifelong member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church, now known as the Struthers Parkside Church. He was also a member of the GIORAS Sunday school class, which he taught for several years.
On Oct. 6, 1995, Russ was the recipient of a heart transplant. Forever grateful, Russ supported and volunteered for Lifebanc, the Ohio-based donor registry program. He also volunteered and participated many years in the U.S. Transplant Games.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth A. Hill, whom he married Oct. 23, 1954; three sons, Russell (Tammy) Beatty Jr. of New Springfield, Randall (Lynn) Beatty of Lowellville, and Richard (Amy) Beatty of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; daughter Ruth Ann Raseta (John J. Gingery) of Poland; 12 grandchildren, Ty Beatty, Jake (Joan) Beatty, Russell (Maria) Beatty III, Cassandra (Bob) Allen, Raymond (Kim) Beatty, Tom Dragus, Travis Beatty, Parker Beatty, Michael Beatty, Cole Beatty, Raeanne Raseta, and Olivia Raseta; and three great-grandchildren, Victoria, Dylan, and Kylee Beatty.
In addition to his parents, Russ was preceded in death by his sister, Judith Duffy.
Funeral services will be held Monday, at 11 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers, with Pastor James Berkebile officiating. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends will be received Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
