Youngstown - Ruby J. Rupe Smith, 92, formerly of Struthers, died early Monday morning, February 17, 2014 at Meridian Arms Living Center, with her family at her side.
Mrs. Smith was born May 18, 1921 in Struthers, the oldest child of Elijah "Jack" and Ellen LaForce Ellis.
She was a 1939 graduate of Struthers High School and worked as a telephone operator and receptionist for various businesses in the area. In 1975, she and her husband Clarence moved to Marietta, Georgia and returned to Struthers in 1988.
She was a charter member of the former Fairview Baptist Church in Youngstown and a member of its choir. Ruby was also a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Lamplight Chapter of Poland.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, genealogy, playing in her monthly card club for many years, playing the organ and listening to music.
Her first husband, Clarence B. Rupe, whom she married March 28, 1946, died October 19, 1993 and her second husband, James W. Smith, whom she married February 20, 1999, died May 31, 2009. She is survived by two daughters, Georgia Pachell of Austintown and Barbara Lukas of Struthers; son, Thomas Rupe of Clearwater, FL; two brothers, Glenn (Lucille) Ellis of Poland and Jack Ellis of Gainesville, GA; 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Ruby was preceded in death by her sisters, Virginia Landy and Verna Gething; and son-in-law, Thomas Pachell.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers, where family and friends will be received Friday from noon-12:45 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
