Roy "Bill" William Slaven, Jr.

New Springfield - Roy "Bill" William Slaven, Jr., 78, formerly of Struthers, died February 6, 2018 at his home.

Roy, known by family and friends as "Bill" was born on November 21, 1939 in Youngstown, a son of Roy and Jeanette (Butterfield) Slaven.

Bill was a lifelong resident of Struthers until moving to New Springfield in 2003. He attended Struthers High School and then enlisted in the United States Army. Bill served from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1964 with the rank of Private First Class.

Mr. Slaven first worked as an x-ray technician for GATX for over 20 years. After the closing of GATX, he became co-owner of Slaven and Ellis Pump Service, which serviced well water. He also worked for Physics International at the Ravenna Arsenal in maintenance and later worked for several hotels in maintenance.

He was a member of the Mahoning Sportsman's Association in Hillsville. Bill enjoyed collecting coins, jigsaw puzzles, watching old western movies, traveling the country with his wife, going to the casino, and gardening. He especially enjoyed the companionship from his Shih Tzu, Mitzi.

His wife, the former Nancy Mae Coleman, whom he married September 3, 1959, preceded him in death on October 28, 2014. He is survived by his two sons, Shawn (Carolyn) Slaven of Leetonia and Robert Slaven of Struthers; two grandchildren, Matthew Slaven of Poland and Nicole Slaven of Leetonia; sister, Carol Farrar of Struthers; and his dear uncle and aunt, James and Ellen McMurray, whose company and friendship he enjoyed over the years.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Justin Slaven; and three brothers, Richard, Thomas, and Robert Slaven.

A committal service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lake Park Cemetery Chapel, 1459 E. Midlothian Blvd., Youngstown.
