Poland - Rosemary Zaluski, 89, died Sunday morning, February 7, 2016 at Assumption Village Nursing Home.
Rosemary was born July 12, 1926 in Ford City, PA, a daughter of Frank and Anna Skocic Bartolovich. At the age of 12, Rosemary's father passed away and she helped her mother raise her three brothers. When Rosemary was age 15, her family moved to Struthers and later resided in Poland with her family.
During World War II, Rosemary worked at Truscon Steel riveting airplanes to help with the war efforts, being a true "Rosie the Riveter". She later attended Beauty School and worked as a beautician for a few beauty shops downtown,the last being for Betty Simon. She operated a beauty salon out of her home for many years. She was always known for her loving nature and generosity lending her helping hand to anyone who needed any assistance.
She was a longtime member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers and more recently a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman. Mrs. Zaluski was also a member of the Red Hats Society, Knollwood Garden Club, the Carbon Ladies Club, and numerous card clubs, and especially enjoyed playing 500 Bid Club, Two Timers. She had lamb roasts and tamburitza parties at the house.
Rosemary's interests included flower arranging and cooking. Rosemary was especially known for her delicious homemade chicken noodle soup and apple pies. She was exceptionally talented in exquisite flower arrangements.
Mrs. Zaluski was very proud of her Croatian heritage and loved its traditional tamburitza music and dance. She was a member of the Croatian Lodge #504 and later Lodge #66. They were invited by the Yugoslovia government to play in Croatia, performing with the "OD SRCE" Orchestra, which means, from the heart. She also visited Rome with the orchestra. Rosemary also performed at Croatian Fraternal Union "Tam Fests" in Cleveland, Nashville, among other venues.
Her husband, Stephen Zaluski, whom she married June 26, 1948, preceded her in death on June 22, 2005. She is survived by her two daughters, Marcia (Cliff)Vanwinkle of Poland, Karen Splain of Cincinnati; a son, Richard (Anni Diamond) Zaluski of South Russell; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Bartolovich and Kathy Bartolovich.
In addition to her parents and husband, Rosemary was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, John, and Frank Bartolovich; her sister, Jenny Bartolovich; and her step-father, Joseph Smok.
A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:15AM, at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas at 10:00AM. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
Friends and family will be received Friday from 4-7PM at the funeral home.
