Poland - Rose T. Garthwaite, 95, died Friday morning, December 1, 2017 at Ohio Living Park Vista.
Rose was born August 17, 1922 in Chicago, IL, a daughter of Vito and Anna (Drumps) Vari.
Rose was raised in Chicago and met her future husband John "Jack" Garthwaite while he was stationed there with the United States Navy during World War II. Upon his discharge, they returned to the Youngstown area and were wed on October 18, 1944. Mrs. Garthwaite was a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker.
A founding member of Holy Family Church in Poland, she was a member of the church choir, Altar Guild, Senior Citizens, and volunteered many years working the spaghetti dinners and fish frys.
In her free time, she enjoyed playing bingo and bowling in a league at Camelot Lanes for many years.
Her husband, Jack, preceded her in death on April 25, 1998. She is survived by three sons, Anthony Garthwaite of Berlin Center, Michael Garthwaite of Boardman, and Timothy (Diane) Garthwaite of Liberty; ten grandchildren, Maria (Rick) Paes, Joseph (Lori) Blinsky, Jimmy Blinsky, Jackie Johnson, Chrissy (Paul) Zubick, Steve (Tricia) Garthwaite, Thomas (Jennifer) Garthwaite, David Garthwaite, Peter Garthwaite, and Julie Garthwaite; daughter-in-law, Mary Garthwaite of New Middletown; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and special nieces and nephews from Oak Lawn, IL, Phillip (Peggy) Faust, Julie (Steve) Szalko, and Donna (Jack) Karnia.
In addition to her parents and husband, Rose was preceded in death by her son, Jack Garthwaite; sisters, Mary Faust and Victoria Maziorka; brothers, Anthony and Frank Vari; mother-in-law and dear friend, Bridget "Nanny" Garthwaite; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Murphy; and daughter-in-law, Myra Garthwaite.
A prayer service will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received on Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
