Windermere, Florida

Richard Stanley "Duke" Wellington, 81 passed away on November 3, 2014 peacefully at his home in Windermere, Florida. He was born Jan. 21, 1933 in Youngstown and attended Boardman High School where he graduated in 1951. He was proudly honored in 2004 for his high school athletic achievements by being voted into the Boardman High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended Muskingham College and eventually graduated from Youngstown College (YSU) receiving his bachelor's degree in business in 1967.
His working career spanned almost 50 years beginning in 1958 with Simples Time Recorder Company in Youngstown. He retired from Simplex in 1988 and spent his remaining work years in the Cleveland area working for Tri-S Controls. He was an avid lover of all sports and a passionate community volunteer. Throughout his years living in Boardman, he participated in many basketball and golf leagues around the Youngstown and Boardman area. He was instrumental in helping to build the Applewood Swim Club that opened in 1965.
Those who knew Duke understood that he was a consummated gentleman and always had a friend everywhere he went. His sense of humor was infectious and he was always looking to help lend support to those who are in need. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and is survived by his two sons, Curt (Linda) of Hilliard and Scott (Shannyn) of Orlando and three grandchildren Christopher, 25 of Pittsburgh, Kevin 18, of Hilliard and Samantha 6, of Orlando. His wife of 57 years, Barbara Jean Wellington passed away in January. They were members of Boardman United Methodist Church for 50 years.
The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions be made in Dukes' name to the new Boardman Stadium Fund, C/O Boardman Booster Club, P.O. Box 3174, Boardman, OH 44513.
Calling hours and a brief service will be held on Saturday, December 13 at 4:30 pm at Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman.
