Robert J. Stanton

November 22, 1928 — March 23, 2014

STRUTHERS - Robert J. "Bob" Stanton, 85, passed away on March 23, 2014, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Bob was born in Youngstown on November 22, 1928, the son of John F. and Frances (Whiston) Stanton. Bob was a 1946 graduate of South High School in Youngstown.

Bob is survived by his wife, Catherine R. (Evanovits) "Kay" Stanton. Bob and Kay were married for 62 years, exchanging their marriage vows on July 12, 1951 at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

Bob was extremely proud of his US Army military service, having served in the Korean War from 1951-52 as Corporal in the 2nd Infantry Division. He was also a member of the Korean War Veterans Association.

Bob retired from Nickles Bakery in 1993, after 42 years in the wholesale bakery business working for Nickles and Ward Baking Company. Over that time, Bob developed many great friendships with fellow employees and customers alike, and will always be remembered for his big smile and good joke to bring laughter to everyone's day.

He will be dearly missed by his entire family: daughter Mary Kay (Alden) Luzi of Wauwatosa, WI, and sons Thomas (Nathalie) Stanton of Erie, PA, Robert (Shari) Stanton of Washington, MI, and Neil (Stacy) Stanton of Canfield, OH. "Grandpa", who was always good for a silly song or a magic trick, will forever be in the memories of his eleven grandchildren; Tommy Stanton, Mara (Jason) Luedeke, Scott (Alecia) Luzi, Drew Luzi, Jacob, Clay (Michele), Wesley, Bradley, Camille, Ian, and Sophie Stanton.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Martha, Marian, and Barbara, and his brothers William and Joseph.

Bob thoroughly enjoyed fishing, bowling and golfing, and even scored a hole-in-one at the age of 74. He was an avid reader in his retirement years, having read hundreds and hundreds of books despite suffering from macular degeneration. He loved history, westerns, and a good spy novel.

For the last fifteen years, Bob was especially proud of the many strong friendships he made at the "ROMEO" coffee club, where he would share a morning coffee and continuous laughter at the Burger King in Boardman with some of the best friends anyone could ever have. Bob's family wishes to thank the coffee club for the help they gave him in this last year -- God bless them all.

Bob's family would also like to express their sincere appreciation for the care provided by Dr. Santuccio Ricciardi and his staff, and the staff members of Home Instead and Shepherd of the Valley.

A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, April 4th at 11:00 AM at Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers. Family and friends will be received Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.

The family requests donations are made in Bob's memory to the Fisher House Foundation (< http://www.fisherhouse.org/> ) helping military families, or to Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.
