Poland - Robert E. Richards, Sr., 81, of Poland, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at his residence.
Robert, affectionately known as Bob, was born April 10, 1933 in Poland, a son of Thomas and Lillian Black Richards.
A life-long resident of Poland, Bob was a graduate of Poland Seminary High School, Class of 1950. In 1951 Bob served in the United States Navy where he learned his trade as an electrician. Bob was honorably discharged in 1954 and returned to Poland.
Bob worked as an electrician for Phoenix Electric Company for 15 years and then Standard Slag/Lafarge for 30 years. He retired from Lafarge in 1995. Bob was a member of the United Steel Workers of America, serving as Local Union President for 18 years. For 17 years, Bob also maintained the baseball fields, cutting grass for Poland Community Baseball Association.
He was a life-long member of the Poland United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #15, Poland, a member of Poland Masonic Lodge F&AM #766 and a 32nd degree Mason of Youngstown Scottish Rite, Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland, and the Youngstown Shrine Club. Bob also coached Little League Baseball in Poland for 6 years.
Bob's wife of 55 years, the former Ethel Mae Osborne, whom he married May 21, 1955 died May 8, 2010. He leaves two sons, Robert E. Richards, Jr. and David L. Richards, Sr., both of Poland; one daughter-in-law, Nancy L. Richards of Matthews, NC; four grandchildren, David L. Richards, Jr. of Poland, Jaclyn J. Richards of Matthews, NC, Melissa J. Richards of Matthews, NC, and Jason R. Richards of Ft. Mill, SC.
Besides his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Thomas J. Richards; two brothers, Thomas S. (Viola) Richards and William J. Richards; and three sisters, Ruby M. (William) Bancroft, Evelyn J. (Earl) Schoenfelt, and Lillian L. Paulin.
Friends will be received Friday, November 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Poland United Methodist Church, where a Masonic Service will be held at 11:00 a.m.
Memorial Services will be held immediately following the Masonic Service with Pastor Michael Grant officiating.
