Robert A. Kimmel

A private memorial service was held Friday, February 18, 2011 for Robert A. Kimmel, 91 of Poland, who died Sunday, February 13, 2011 at St. Mary's Alzheimer Center.

He was born May 28, 1919 in Youngstown, a son of Austin and Mabel Bunn Kimmel.

Mr. Kimmel graduated from Boardman High School in 1937. After graduating, he worked in the family business, Kimmel's Saddle Shop. After attending the Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin, he earned a degree in Animal Husbandry. Operating a dairy farm in Poland Township led to the Farm Bureau and then to a lifelong vocation as a butcher, working for Kroger, Golden Dawn, Listorti's and Mavars. He also worked as a meat supervisor for Smallwood Meat Packing in Middlefield, Ohio. Upon retirement he became an antique dealer owning 2 shops in Poland Village. They were the Old Stone Tavern and Feast House #1. He traveled locally and out of state as a dealer.

Mr. Kimmel was a member of the Poland Masonic Lodge #766 F.&A.M, the Poland Ruritan Club, he served as a member of the Poland Village Council and was a member of the Northeastern Ohio Antique Study Club.

He married Rose Elizabeth Carman from Youngstown, in Richmond, KY on October 26, 1940. Rose passed away December 15, 1988 in Youngstown. Robert and Rose were members of the Poland Presbyterian Church.

Robert is survived by his son, James C. (Lisa) Kimmel of Thompson; two daughters; Nancy (John) Lewis of Canfield, and Suzann (John) Mayberry of Poland, Four grandchildren, Kerry (Bill) Shugart of Salem, Robert (Rebecca) Lewis of McDonald, Aaron Kimmel of Charleston, SC and Jessica (Luke) Veon of Saybrook, and Seven Great-Grandchildren.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard "Bud" Kimmel.

The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association of Youngstown, 3695 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 301, Canfield OH 44406.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.
