ROBERT LAWRENCE EICH, 82
Robert "Bob" Eich, 82, died peacefully September 26, 2012 at his home surrounded by family.
Bob was born July 19, 1930 in Youngstown, Ohio.
Son of Lawrence W. Eich and Elizabeth (Keebler) Eich.
A graduate of Poland Seminary High School.
Bob married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne Dixon in
August 1952. They just celebrated their 60th Wedding
Anniversary. They lived in Poland and Naples Florida.
A devoted husband, loving father, proud Grandfather and
Great-Grandfather.
In 1953 he took over his father's insurance agency when he died
suddenly. His brother, William L. Eich joined him in 1961 to start Eich Bros. Insurance Agency. The Agency was the first in Mahoning Country to become paper-less.
He served as a Trustee in the 9th District of the Independent
Insurance Agents of Ohio and was a member of Independent
Insurance Agents of Mahoning County. When he retired, his son
Martin purchased Bob's share of the agency, making 3 generations of the Eich Family.
Bob had been Chairman of The Samuel K. Hine Fund of Poland
Village for 46 years. He served on the Poland Volunteer Fire
Department for 20 years and retired as Asst. Fire Chief.
He was a Private Pilot with a Single Engine, Multiple Engine and an
Instrument Rating. Bob was a member of the Aircraft Owners &
Pilots Association & The American Bonanza Society.
He was a member of the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce and chaired the Aviation Committee. He and his son, Allan spent many hours flying together.
Bob was a Board Member of the Poland Schools Foundation for
Educational Excellence. In 2009 he received the Alumni of the
Year award.
He was a member of the Youngstown Private Industrial
Council, Board Member of the Forest Lawn Memorial Park,
A charter member of the Poland Investment Club and a
Trustee and President of the Poland Swim Club.
He was a 60-year member of the Poland Presbyterian Church,
serving as a Deacon, Elder & Trustee. He also was a member
of the Naples Community Church. A Board Member and Treasurer of Vanderbilt Surf Colony 1 of Naples Florida.
He enjoyed working around his home & yard, woodworking,
flying, travel, being in Naples Florida, watching sport activities
of the grandchildren and enjoyed family celebrations.
Robert and Suzanne had three children; Allan R. Eich, who died in October 2005, (Susan Eich) of Fort Mill, SC.
Karen Eich (Ronald) Leko of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Martin R. (Christine) Eich of Poland.
He was very proud of his grandchildren & great grandchild to:
Keith & Lisa Eich, Christopher Eich;Jessica & Max Leko; Jennifer, Julia and Jason Eich; and great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Eich. He also leaves behind a sister Dorothy Hahn of Centerville, OH.
In addition to his parents and son, he was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Sunderlin; and a brother, William L. Eich.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11AM at the Poland Presbyterian Church.
Family and friends will be received Friday from 5-8PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and Saturday from 10-10:45AM at the church.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff
and nurses of MVI Hospice for their excellent care and
compassion for Robert.
