Youngstown - Robert Wayne Compton, 73, passed away March 6, 2025 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman, after an 11-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia. His family would like to think he simply got tired of telling everyone else how to do things the right way.
He was born May 13, 1951 in Youngstown, a son of the late Arnold and Martha (Drake) Compton. He worked as a self-employed painter and was a dedicated lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
Beneath his rough edges, outspoken opinions, and stubborn ways, Robert had a soft heart. He took great pride in his garden, where he battled rabbits and groundhogs with the same determination he applied to all of life’s little struggles. Fishing was his escape, providing not only relaxation, but great catfish and walleye dinners. When the fish weren’t biting, Petrillo’s Pizza, followed by a bowl of Neapolitan ice cream with Squirt were a great option. “Ahh, the finer things in life.” Robert would say. His granddaughters were the true joy of his later years. Robert found unique ways of showing them his love. From sending seeds and gardening tips, sharing favorite songs, and always making sure there was spare change floating around his apartment, every package, call or visit became a treasure to the girls. Although not always apparent or clear, each gesture he made came from a place of deep down love.
He leaves behind his children, Trisha (LaMont Whited) Lysowski of Youngstown, Benjamin (Samantha) Compton of Spring, TX, and Crystal Compton of North Webster, IN; his stepdaughter, Alicia (Derek) Stoner of Lowellville; his grandchildren, Araya Joy, Symphony, Aria, Tayla, and Taryn; brother, Harry Compton of Boonville, KY; sister, Elizabeth Townsend of Raleigh, North Carolina; nephew, Anthony Compton; and niece, Tara (KB) Suarez.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Sharlet Compton.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Struthers, immediately followed by a funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Lowellville Cemetery.
