Poland-Robert A. Baer Jr,, 73, died Saturday, June 6, 2014 in Masternick Memorial Health Care Center. He was born in Youngstown on April 6, 1942 to Robert A. Baer Sr. and Helen Pfingsgraff Baer.
He was a 1960 graduate of Youngstown South High School and went on to attend Texas Lutheran College for two years. He retired from Poland High School in 2012 after 25 years of employment as a custodian. He helped at Poland sporting events in the ticket booths and concessions. Prior to his work with the school, he was employed with Wean United Engineering, was the owner/operator of Malco Supply Company and worked as a custodian and usher at Martin Luther Church, where he was a member for many years.
He was a member of and an usher at Old North Church in Canfield, Wick Masonic Lodge, Mahoning Sportsman's Association, Bessemer Sportsman's Club, Mohawk Physical Therapy and Fitness Center and the Youngstown Saxson Club.
Robert enjoyed fishing, gardening, kayaking and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He volunteered with Hospice and the Bondage Busters amongst many other groups, and was an extreme caregiver.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Carol Nelson Baer; children, Robert Baer, Julie Layne, David (Sara) Baer and Matthew (Shanna) Baer; his mother, Helen Baer; grandchildren, Kristen Baer, Ashlee Baer, Randy Snyder, Nathan Snyder, Daniel Baer, Jacob Snyder, Stephen Baer, Billy Slater, Brianna Baer, Chloe Baer and Charlotte Baer; great grandchildren, Gavin and Peyton; brother, Ken Baer; sister Sally Packard and sister-in-law, Judith Campradt.
His father, Robert A. Baer Sr. preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11am at Old North Church, 7105 Herbert Rd. Canfield with Pastor Al Detter officiating. Burial will follow in Poland Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7pm at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 Main St. Poland and prior to the service from 10-10:45am at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to Seidman Cancer Center at University Hospitals in Cleveland.
