Boardman- Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 AM at Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman, OH., for Richard N. (Saxey) Thompson who passed away Wednesday morning at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. VA.
Rick was born October 5, 1943 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, a son of Nellis E. and Martha Irene (Thompson) Thompson. Rick was a 1961 graduate of Howland High School and attended Youngstown State University where he was the first Saxophone Major. He was also a member and president of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
Rick owned and operated the Boardman A&W Family Restaurant from 1972-2010. He supported the Hot Rod Nationals and organized multiple car club shows every Friday night from 1986-2010.
A veteran of the US Army, Rick served from 1967-1969 as a SP5. While serving in the Army he was a member of the 291st Army Band (Thirstquakers-off post) playing the alto and soprano saxophones as well as the clarinet, and percussion instruments.
Rick was a member of the Poland Lodge F&AM 766 and a 32nd Degree Mason of the Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite, where he was an organist for the Masonic Temple. He was a member of the Aut Mori Grotto serving as "Saxey the Clown" and participated for many years in the former annual Aut Mori Grotto Circus held at the Struthers Field House. He was a member of the rock band "The Shadows" and three piece combo "Penny Arcade." Rick was an avid booster of the Boardman High School Band and Orchestra Association where he once served as Vice President.
Rick his survived by his wife, Vicki Lyn (Bettiker) Thompson, whom he married August 7, 1971; daughters, Stacey Lyn (Cameron ) Pease of Westchester, OH and their two children, Makaly and Coryn; Suzanne Lyn (Robert) Maddock of Yorktown, VA., and their three children, Jacob, Tyler and Hannah; and brother-in-law, John (Dottie) Bettiker of Champion, OH. Rick was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 PM and Wednesday from 10:00-10:45 AM at the funeral home. The Poland Lodge will conduct a service at 7:00 PM on Tuesday
