Boardman

Boardman - Richard J. Weimer, 72, died Thursday evening, November 22, 2018 at the Renaissance of Richfield.

Richard, affectionately known as "Dick" was born on October 20, 1946 in Youngstown, a son of George and Hilda (Lucas) Weimer.

A lifelong area resident, Dick was a 1964 gradate of Boardman High School. He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's degree in guidance counseling and economics, both from Youngstown State. He began his teaching career at Canfield High School as a math teacher until taking a teaching position with Boardman Schools. While at Boardman, Mr. Weimer taught high school math for several years, before becoming one of the high school's guidance counselors, a position he held until his retirement in 2008 after 38 years with the district.

While working full-time for Boardman Schools, Dick also taught mathematics and economics part-time for Youngstown State University and in the late 90's worked evenings and weekends for the Ohio Turnpike Commission for 11 years.

Dick had a lifelong passion for sports, especially baseball. He owned and operated Boardman Sports Cards on Southern Blvd. for numerous years and enjoyed collecting and dealing sports cards throughout his life. He loved all Cleveland sports teams, especially cheering for the Indians. While his son Scott was growing up, he enjoyed coaching his Little League team while playing for Boardman Community Baseball, leading Cailor-Fleming team to a championship. Dick also enjoyed babysitting his granddaughters in retirement, reading the newspaper daily, and family vacations to Myrtle Beach.

Dick was known for his quick wit and sarcasm.  He was a guidance counselor by day but shared his "words of wisdom" with friends and family who often looked to him for support.  He had a way of helping you through life's issues while making you laugh hysterically at the same time.  He showed others that they were not defined by their mistakes but rather by perseverance and a continued drive to do better.  He believed in Jesus and life after death and held true to those beliefs during very difficult times in his life.  Dick's family continues to celebrate the incredible gift of his life on earth and his glorious eternity in heaven.

He was a member of Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

His wife and high school sweetheart, the former Nancy L. Hake, whom he married March 16, 1968, preceded him in death on December 8, 2007. Dick is survived by two children, Holly (Luke) Watts of Boardman and Scott Weimer of Boardman; two brothers, Dwight Behrend of California and Alan (Carol) Weimer of Colorado; two granddaughters, Taylor and Kylie Watts; and his brother in law, Jeffrey (Mary) Hake of Boardman.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Weimer was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Behrend.

A memorial service celebrating Dick's life will be held on Friday, November 30th at 6 p.m. at Davis-Becker Funeral Home, where family and friends will be received from 4-5:45 p.m., prior to the service.

Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in Mr. Weimer's name to the Richard J. and Nancy L. Weimer Scholarship Fund, Boardman Local Schools-Treasurer's Department at 7410 Market Street, Boardman, OH 44512.

The family would like to express their appreciation and thank the Renaissance of Richfield and Kindred Hospice for their compassionate and undivided care of Dick.
