Struthers - Richard Edward Savko, 78, died Saturday morning at Maplecrest Nursing Home in Struthers.
Richard, also known as Dick, was born March 20, 1933 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Margaret Dickson Savko.
As a child, Dick was a victim of polio and overcame many obstacles and became a great athlete. He was a 1951 graduate of Ursuline High School where he was Captain of the 1950-1951 Irish Club that won 17 straight games. In the mid 1980s he was inducted into the Ursuline High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
Dick went on to claim fame as a fast pitch softball pitcher in Lil Parker's AA circuit, the league sent many teams to the state finals. Dick was considered one of the best during the late 1940s and 1950s. He was also a member of one of the earlier clubs, the South Side A.C. that qualified to participate in Toledo. Listed as his achievements are a half dozen no-hitters and over 20 one-hit gems.
Dick was employed at Dom Perry Tailor in Youngstown before being employed by the Mahoning County Commissioner as an assistant building superintendent for the Mahoning County Courthouse. He retired after 30 years of service.
Richard loved watching sports particularly Baseball.
His love of his life, his wife, the former Nancy Hynes, whom he married July 21,1956, died March 1, 1989; he is survived by two daughters, Mary Savko of Struthers and Nancy (Sam Medellin) Savko of Avondale, AZ; four sons, Richard Savko of LasVegas, NV, Mark and Joseph Savko both of Struthers, and James Savko of LosAngelas, CA;and two grandchildren, Nancy and Sable.
Besides his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brother, James Savko.
Private services will be held Tuesday at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
