Lt. Col. Richard J. Kury, US Army Corps of Engineers, 68, also of Midlothian, Va., died after a long courageous battle with cancer, Feb. 28, 2016, at Hospice of the Valley House. Richard was born April 13, 1947, in Cleveland, a son of Robert and Loretta Melchior. Richard graduated from John Marshall High School in Cleveland. He went on to get his Bachelor’s Degrees from University of Akron, Siena Heights College, where he served as vice president, and University of Toledo. He continued his education with receiving his Master’s at The Ohio State University and Doctorate from University of Akron. He was a Professor of Military Science at Harvard-MIT, Boston, Mass.
Rich was a Pentagon Officer, where his last assignment was in resource management and Project Army Reserve, HQ OCAR USARSC, in Arlington, Va. Richard was involved in and supported many organizations throughout the years. Richard is survived by his wife the former, Patricia Maylone of Boardman, whom he married Oct. 7, 1978. He enjoyed many years of traveling with her. He also leaves his step-children, Richard A. (Stephanie) Maylone of Cortland, Roxanne E. Datchuk of Niles, Ronna A. (Earl) Liston of Hubbard, and Robin L. (Jim) Davis of Poland; three half-brothers, William Kury, Lynn (Diane) Stright, and Dan (Shelly) Melchior; one half-sister, Connie (Mike) Ashley; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Richard was preceded in death by one half-sister, Terry Cabrera. There will be a private funeral service at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Wade Park and Richmond Veteran’s Hospital, National Institute for Health, University Hospital, St. Elizabeth Health Center and Blood and Cancer, for the loving care they provided.
