Youngstown - Richard Leroy Johnson, 84, died Thursday morning, September 6, 2012, at Maplecrest Nursing Home in Struthers.
Mr. Johnson, affectionately known as "Dick" was born February 20, 1928, in Lowellville, the oldest child of Harry and Helen Schrader Johnson.
He was a 1946 graduate of Lowellville High School and was part of the first undefeated Lowellville Rockets football team. Dick first worked as a contractor for Fithian Construction and retired as a carpenter and hitcher from Wean United.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. He was an avid fan of western movies, especially John Wayne films, and enjoyed Native American Art and History, and rock collecting. One of Dick's favorite vacations and memories was driving across the United States to the Grand Canyon and Disneyland in California with his children in the family station wagon.
He leaves his wife, the former Mary Ferry, whom he married February 7, 1948; two sons, Richard (Victoria) Johnson Jr. of Youngstown and Michael (Diane) Johnson of Poland; four daughters, Sally (Martin) Hobby of Poland, Mary Johnson, Susan Johnson, both of Youngstown, and Patty (Nicholas) DiVencenzo of Struthers; one brother, Larry (Janet) Johnson of Greensburg, PA; three sisters, Delores Westley of Greensburg, PA, Nancy (Jack) Jewell of Findley, OH, and Kathy (Chuck) Fitch of Edinburg, PA; 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Johnson Whipkey; grandson, Vincent DiVencenzo; three sisters, Jeannine List, Judy Taylor, and Caroline Johnson; and two brothers, Ralph and Harry Johnson.
A prayer service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in the lower church hall of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
