POLAND – Richard “Rich” or “Richie” W. Batyske passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 18, 2017, closely surrounded by his family.
Rich was born June 8, 1938, in Youngstown, a son of the late William and Anna (Russ) Batyske. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth DeRose and four brothers, Merle, Edward “Moon,” Chester “Chet” and Leonard “Lenny.”
Rich lived in Youngstown for his entire life and was a 1956 graduate of Canfield High School. He had a social and entrepreneurial spirit. In 1967, he established the company Canfield Floors, a successful residential and commercial flooring company that served Northeast Ohio and beyond. He also took over a local bar in Youngstown known as the Peacock Gardens, which he and a friend enjoyed running together for a few years.
His hobbies included golf, watching NASCAR, listening to polka music, cooking, working in his yard and spending time with his cats, whom he adored. Rich was widely known for his mischievous sense of humor, his boldness and his sizzling laugh.
Rich leaves his wife of 40 years, Carol A. Petro, whom he married Aug. 14, 1977; three daughters, Terri A. (Bob) Morton of Reno, Nev., Judith A. (Ken) Schenker of Canfield, and Brenda A. (Steve Moenter) Batyske of Columbus; a son, Mick (Rana) Batyske of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life gathering was held on Sunday, March 19, at Davidson's Restaurant in Youngstown. Many friends and loved ones gathered and shared their memories of Richard. The family wishes to thank everyone for their continued support.
Burial services will be held at a later date.
Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions to Hospice House, a part of Mercy Health’s Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St. Youngstown, OH 44512, 330-788-1992, in gratitude for their excellent care and compassion.
Arrangements are being handled by the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland Chapel.
